Who We Are
The Upper Meramec Prescribed Burn Association (UMPBA) is a volunteer-led, community-based organization formed in July 2023. Our members include landowners, neighbors, and conservation partners who share a commitment to restoring and maintaining healthy landscapes through the safe and effective use of prescribed fire.
By working together, we aim to strengthen the use of prescribed burning as a practical land management tool for improving wildlife habitat, enhancing native plant diversity, and reducing fuel loads that contribute to uncontrolled wildfires.
Our Mission
UMPBA is organized exclusively for charitable, scientific, and educational purposes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our mission is to provide education and encourage the responsible use and reintroduction of fire as an environmental management tool — to foster native flora and fauna, create habitat for native species, and support healthy ecosystems across Crawford, Dent, and Phelps counties.
We believe that prescribed fire, when planned and executed safely, is one of the most effective tools for promoting resilient ecosystems and sustainable working lands in Missouri's Ozark region.
Our Goals
- Promote prescribed fire as a safe, effective, and science-based management tool.
- Build a network of trained volunteers to assist landowners with planning and operations. - Provide shared equipment and training resources to members.
- Coordinate training events, workshops, and safety briefings throughout the year.
- Foster collaboration among landowners, agencies, and local fire districts.
- Encourage the restoration of native habitats for the benefit of wildlife and the broader community.
Our Area of Focus
The UMPBA serves landowners and members across the Upper Meramec River watershed, including portions of Crawford, Dent, and Phelps counties. Our members represent a diverse mix of woodland, pasture, and prairie managers who share a common goal: to use prescribed fire responsibly to improve the land for future generations.
Leadership
The Upper Meramec PBA is guided by a volunteer Board of Directors dedicated to promoting safety, education, and cooperation among members. Each board member plays an active role in coordinating burns, maintaining equipment, organizing training, and fostering community partnerships.
